Michael Bowen, M.D.

Psychiatrist (Adult, Adolescent, and Sports) & Sleep Medicine Physician

Michael Bowen, M.D. is a physician who is board-certified in both psychiatry and sleep medicine. Dr. Bowen also received certification from the American Board of Sports & Performance Psychiatry. He is a former active duty Navy psychiatrist who spent eight years treating Sailors and Marines in both the hospital and operational settings. His interest in sleep medicine stems from recognition that disruption of sleep is very common and represents an important focus of psychiatric treatment worthy of additional multidisciplinary training. Sleep that is disrupted by psychiatric illness does not always resolve with other psychiatric symptoms, and if poor sleep is left unaddressed, it may become a risk factor for future mental health concerns.

Dr. Bowen received his undergraduate training (A.B. degree in anthropology, NCAA Division I athlete/swimmer for four years) at Harvard College and completed his medical training at The Ohio State University College of Medicine (M.D. degree). He completed his psychiatry residency at Naval Medical Center San Diego, where in his final year he served as a chief resident. After four years of psychiatric practice post-residency training, he began a fellowship in sleep medicine at the University of Arizona College of Medicine, which he completed in July 2023. He has also received Certification from the American Board of Sports & Performance Psychiatry and the Certificate of Additional Training in Sports Psychiatry from the International Society of Sports Psychiatry. He is a member of the American Psychiatric Association, the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, and the International Society of Sports Psychiatry.

Dr. Bowen’s interests lie at the intersection of psychiatric illness, sleep, and daily functioning and performance, through a lens of improving both quality of life and longevity. His primary clinical focuses are the treatment of anxiety, ADHD, insomnia, and circadian rhythm sleep-wake disorders, all of which can significantly impact quality of life. Each assessment begins with a broad assessment of health, including mental and physical health as well as the social context in which a person lives. Dr. Bowen is passionate about using all the tools of a psychiatric practice, including judicious use of medications, gaining understanding via psychodynamic principles, and utilizing tools from a cognitive-behavioral approach, to increase an individual’s functioning, decrease distress, and achieve specific goals. He strives to form an honest, collaborative therapeutic alliance with each person he treats and is excited for each opportunity to leverage his expertise to help a fellow human being. He is also a believer in a wellness model of health and that there are benefits from the therapeutic process beyond just the diagnosis of disorders. Therapy can be a wonderful way to learn about oneself and to gain benefit from new insights!

Outside of work, Dr. Bowen enjoys spending time with family and friends, learning new things, swimming, hiking, and traveling.
